Food Drive Success

As many people know, Shelton High School was hit by a devastating fire on December 30, 2008. This fire caused millions of dollars in damage and left the school closed for a week—right at the beginning of the FIRST build season.
However, the fire did more than just displace the Shelton student body. The Shelton Food Bank, located at the school, was completely wiped out during the fire. The food bank helps feed over 50 needy families in the Shelton school district.
To help replenish its supply, Team 230 contacted all of the teams attending the Suffield Shakedown scrimmage and asked them to bring donations of non-perishable food items for the food bank. Our attempts were met with an overwhelmingly positive response. Many teams pledged to bring food to the scrimmage, and several teams helped spread the message throughout their schools to gather as much food as possible.
The day of the scrimmage, the Gaelhawks manned a table collecting donations from teams. So much food was collected that several team members had to make multiple trips to the team trailer to prevent the food from piling up.
The team’s food drive was a huge success. Team 230 took home a trailer filled with boxes of cereal, cans of soup, and many other items of food. In addition, several teams gave monetary donations to the food bank.
Thanks to the generosity of all teams, the Shelton food bank is fuller than it has ever been before.
